Common GWR Locomotive Classes

This section is to give modellers a bit of an idea of the more common and at the same time interesting GWR locomotive classes. We also want to highlight which of these classes have ready to run (RTR) models or plastic kits available.

The common loads section is intended to show the modeller the types of rolling stock to couple to the locos for a "typical" look.

The unusual loads section is designed to give the modeller some ideas for a really different but still authentic look. This is where the fun stuff comes into it - creating something totally out of the ordinary, something no other modeller is likely to have. So go for it. Have some fun!

NOTE: This is not an exhaustive list of GWR locomotives. For a complete listing of GWR engine stock, engine numbers, shed allocations etc., please click the link to the GWR Archive website at http://www.greatwestern.org.uk/sitemap.htm

MODELS AVAILABLE

Period of Operation:

  • Last of the heavy shunting engines produced for the GWR, first introduced in 1947 - Hawksworth design.

Usual Operating Region

  • Route Availability - Red
  • Fitting of the coned and domeless Swindon Standard No10 boiler increased the weight of the 94xx by 6 tons over its predecessor the 57xx, making it unsuitable for some areas of operation, not good in a shunting engine designed for all manner of assignments.
  • The engines were ideal, however in arduous low-speed conditions, most notably on the Lickey incline between Bristol & Birmingham where they acted as banking engines, often working in groups of three or even four pushing heavy freights up the grade.
  • Extremely short wheelbase (15xx) of 12'10" enabled it to negotiate curves with a radius as tight as 3 chains.
  • Of the 10 15xx's built, most ended up working in the London & Newport areas.
  • Some ended up in colliery service
  • Two 94xx have been preserved.

Common Loads

  • Heavy hauling of freight trains and shunting on restricted curves
  • Banking duties
  • Short distance freight and passenger duties

Unusual Loads
